PAAVOHARJU
Yhä hämärää

[Fonal Records, www.fonal.com]

Finland is the breeding ground for new sounds nowadays. [Next week, Estonia and Uruguay will be the order of the day, so we'll tackle those issues once the need arises.] Based in eastern Finland, trio known as Paavoharju sound like they create their music truly in a vacuum [or a dark cave that has not had contact with civilization for centuries]. While elements from various parts of the world creep into their music - from Tuvan throat singing to far-eastern modal elements - it's their courage to mix various elements that gets a thumbs up from this reviewer. Lauri Ainala possesses a timeless quality in her voice. It's equally eerie and mysterious. Listen to the way it snakes its way between various instruments that are played around her. It's hard to tell whether it's Lauri that sets the pace or whether it's the rest of the band that leads? Created over a span of four years [between 2001 and 2005], "Yhä hämärää" is a true world record. Cheap organs, samplers, electric guitar drones, tons of purposeful reverb and grungy intoxicating noise, wicked echoing sounds - remaining members of the band - Johannes Pitkänen, Olli Ainala, Jenni Koivistoinen, Toni Kähkönen, Antti Lind, Joose Keskitalo, Lari Lätti have plenty of work on their hands. The musical variety here is endless. Plenty of folk, world, psychedelic, rock and even goth elements make it to the mix. "Musta Katu" comes off like some dreary dub-rock single recorded on a cheap 4-track, while "Syvyys" resembles a devotional Indian raga. My only regret is I don't speak Finnish so the meaning of these [supposedly Christian spiritual songs] is lost on me. Despite this, I'm still lost in the sounds and textures the ensemble serves up. "Yhä hämärää" is an important record if purely for its total and complete originality.
