Atheist Lovesongs to God

[Resonant, www.resonantlabel.com]

Why would anyone need to brood over one's life? Is it really necessary to put yourself down in the dumps only to examine the worthlessness of your own life? Is life worth living at all or is there a greater meaning to all of this? These are some of the questions Jason Merritt [aka Whip] examines on his latest solo outing "Atheist Songs to God". Full of brimming contradictions and thorough examinations of his deepest and darkest self, this is a record that from a lyrical perspective is a difficult pill to swallow. Though musically, Jason remains closely tied with the folk-country movement [elements of Cash, Dylan and Young are heard everywhere], from a lyrical perspective, he's a difficult nut to crack. On "Perfect Dive", he sings with what seems like all seriousness "When God moves on water, better do perfect dive". At this point, you start to wonder. Is he an atheist trying to explain why God doesn't exist or does God really not exist and is Jason really just telling it like it is? This is real and brutal honesty he's dishing out here. "Oh why" Jason seems to be questioning himself quite thoroughly. There is no window dressing and no overt production that would steal any of the stark beauty of the recording. The only weak point is Jason's take on Cobain's death on "Ballad of Cobain". Perhaps because I never saw Cobain as a role model or a martyr to aspire to, his take on Cobain is a bit puzzling to me. One stand-out track is "16th Mission". With its ragged guitar and banjo picking, Jason's voice here lifts the song to new levels. Along side its' more sombre cousins, this is the most obviously out-of-place track on the record. With a barren voice, stark guitar work and the mood of lonely tumbleweeds being tossed around a desert, "Atheist Songs to God" is a soundtrack to human loneliness.
