Not Not Fun Records is a Los Angeles label that is heavy on the DIY aesthetic. Their LPs are all limited editions and each release comes packaged in gorgeous and often unique artwork. From a musical perspective, they're really on the cutting edge; in a wasteland between noise, free improve, guttural minimalism and fuck-you music. Basically, anything goes as long as originality is there.

Portland native trio Yuma Nora take a stab at free improve on their latest release "Jewels in the Snakepit". Trio made up of Aaron Reyna on drums and vocals, Jake Anderson on guitars and specialty sounds [!] and Amy Vecchione on function generator and vocals seem to favour improvisation that is loud, direct and over the top. It's almost as if Last Exit was reborn with some guttural vocals during their long jams. Jake Anderson's guitar sounds crunchy, almost as if it was put through some sort of a juicer. When he takes a solo, it's never for show. Rather, he put these in here to accentuate a point and to colour the landscape with a different paintbrush. When he gets into feedback territory ["Ecstatic Returns"], he tortures the listeners with waves and waves of sound long enough before he slowly pulls away. When vocals are present, it sounds as if they're drowned out by everything else happening all around. Whoever is singing resembles some long lost opera star, or it could just be that they've listened to too many early Robert Wyatt records. All in all, this is a shronk fest of the highest order.

I've no idea who or what Robedoor is. A strange creature from the never-never land perhaps. What matters is the recent CD-R release "Grendel Glare" is half-an-hour of some of the most luscious drone sounds this side of paradise. Packaged in a sleeve that has the roughest sandpaper on one side and black and blue artwork on the other, the artistic side reflects the sombre music inside quite well. Made up of Britt on throat drones and Alex on Casio torture [I kid you not!], the duo perpetuates a long, ceaseless series of drones that rather than pissing people off are actually soothing and nice in nature. All that needs to be said is the loopy drone progresses from an ominous tone to a warm, very hollow sound. Bits and pieces of high-pitched frequencies make it into the mix but that's about as scary as these sounds get. Otherwise, "Grendel Glare" is a trip to the edge of the cliff of nothingness. You hear the howling winds and feel the need to dive right into the deep, cold water.
