Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life

[Resonant, www.resonantlabel.com]

While these two releases may not have anything holding them together at first go, on second glance, their disparity and loss of hope comes through in their music quite clearly.

Soulful electronica or folk meets electronica? Is this the future of this genre? Is electronic music getting a heart? Simon Kealoha's debut "Small Talk Kills Me" is a perfect instance of a meeting point of electronica, lounge and folk elements. An hour worth of what, you ask? Well, there are gentle hisses, lots of twangy guitars, soothing synths and soft beats and loopy samples. What Simon is going for is the feel and the textured sound. Scratched-up records, elusive toned-down keyboards and machines that feel warm to the touch; Simon is definitely exploring the tender side of the groove. This tender side is not to be confused with ambient music. Though it's lounge and even lazy, it's definitely not background music. An abrasive hissing hidden track even makes its way onto the record. What is truly amazing is the organic feel of every single track included. I'm talking about warmth and a comfort level that can't really be put into words. Let's put it this way, the sounds are not simple manipulations and experimental bits simply for experiment's sake. These are wordless pop songs from a land inhabited by soft electronica, folk music and lounge. It's great to see how the siblings get along so well.

Bleakness is a virtue or so thinks the Swedish duo of Library Tapes. David and Per employ various instrumentation - lots of piano, acoustic guitars, screwdrivers, computers and plenty of field recordings - to give us a picture of a black and white life, a life that is left devoid of meaning and purpose. Each track begins and progresses slowly through a murky, bleak landscape that is a cross between depression music with a level of electronic flavour thrown in [in the form of well placed field recordings that permeate the landscape]. If you thought Red House Painters' self-titled debut was the sound of bleakness, then this is the sound of an actual act of suicide - such hideous amounts of desperation in one piece of music. There is no turning back once your mind is made up. As slow piano segments are played in endless repetition [often times, just slow, single key strokes], looped-up guitars swirl around and the sound continues on forever. Chamber music comes to mind but the field recordings make these sound somewhat more contemporary and emotive. This is as bleak a sonic landscape as you're bound to hear. Redemption never arrives at the tail end of the record. In fact, the further you dig into the record, the dimmer it gets. I'm not sure whether David and Per are sad individuals. I'm only sure of one thing. "Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life" is bleak music for the day your mood turns sour.
