HARALD SACK ZIEGLER
Punkt

[Staubgold, www.staubgold.com]

Cologne-based Harald Sack Ziegler has been making music that is intuitively cheap and just childish. Former collaborator of F.S. Blumm as well as Mouse on Mars, he exhibits a kind of innocence that is rarely seen in pop music. Almost like a naďve Daniel Johnson, Harald is a big proponent of the DIY aesthetic. Grab a cheap mike, grab a guitar and a cheap percussion set, take a 4-track and put everything down to tape for posterity. Staubgold has done something that it likes to do. It took a risk and released 22 of his long out-of-print, never-released on CD pieces he put down to tape over the last couple of decades and called the whole thing "Punkt". Does the title mean Harald is a former punk or does it simply mean that he's punked or is there another hidden meaning here? Whatever the case may be, these pieces scream childishness and purity of intent. Most clock in between one and two minutes and this seems to be an ideal timeframe for Harald to express his anxiety, anger, frustration, joy or just excitement for the love of the song as an art form. Pop, rock, folk and most of all dada elements seep into the mix. This guy doesn't really have a standout voice, but he's not afraid to show his short-comings. He's not a virtuoso on any given instrument but that doesn't stop him from playing most instruments on this brief, 38 minute compilation. Don't expect any sort of clean, over-produced shiny crap. >From the rock attack of "Lied der Konigin" to the absurdity of "Teenage Lover" to the restrained hushed beauty of "Barbie Hymne", Harald goes for the jugular and sings about important things in life. We're talking about the basics - love, anger, purity of purpose and absurdity of rock'n'roll. If more people wore their hearts on their sleeves the way Harald does, this world would surely be a better place.
