MAX NAGL ENSEMBLE
Quartier Du Faisan

Saxophonist/composer Max Nagl's work has fascinated me over the years, though I'd never quite taken the leap and discovered his work in any particular detail. Certainly his last few hathut releases - "Flamingos" and "Big Four" - were both stand outs in his catalogue as was an older Leo release "Daily Bullet". Otherwise, I'd known Nagl simply as a sideman [he's played with various artists from Christian Mühlbacher, Werner Dafeldecker, Burkhard Stagl, Otto Lechner, Tom Cora and others] - someone who was always willing to come to the table with new ideas.

This time around [as on "Ramasuri"] he revitalizes his ensemble to present his own unique vision of big-band music. Ellingtonian and certainly high on melody, this last fact should not surprise anyone vaguely familiar with Nagl's music. The first few pieces of this hour-long suite are heavy on melody, but as we get into "Breakstone Variations II", there is a slight sign of chaos emerging. The solos - in this case from Nagl himself - become much more biting and vicious then at the initial phase of the suite. The whole still retains its melodic purpose, it's just that the strength of the hurricane has now intensified. Once the storm goes away, we're left with "Luis" - a waltz-like piece featuring Franz Hautzinger on a surprisingly soothing quarter tone trumpet solo. Other solos on the record include a number of strikingly underplayed trombone solos from Martin Ptak, a rousing piano bit from Clemens Salesny and a light, melodic stirring trumpet solo from Lorenz Raab. What's fascinating about the suite as a whole is Nagl doesn't loose control over his ensemble for even a fraction of a minute. This is precisely his strength as an arranger. All is steeped deep in melody and every note sings for the want of being heard. Intensely satisfying music.
