THEO JORGENSMANN
Fellowship

[hathut, www.hathut.com]

An odd thing about extending a quartet by adding a couple of special guests to the line-up is that it doesn't always work. Theo Jorgensmann's work as a leader of a quartet was fine, some may even say splendid. His semi-tribute to Ornette Coleman "To Ornette - Hybrid Identity" [hathut] was a finely crafted concoction of improvised music. This time around though, we get an older recording [dating back to 1998]. For the "Fellowship" session, Theo invited Lithuanian soprano saxophonist Petras Vysniauskas along with alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano. The results are mixed at best. Sure, the three elongated pieces [each one clocking in around the 20 minute mark] establish a comfortable improvising factor in this sextet. While each of these pieces has some fine solos from each of the players - Charlie Mariano's alto squelches alongside Petras Vysniauskas' smooth soprano wails - it's when the players become too comfortable with each other that the pieces start to loose their lustre. There should be a certain degree of tension present - something that would give each player a focal point to rally against. The bad news is that focal point is sadly missing. In sections, Karl Berger's vibraphone work sounds like it's rallying against over-the-top drum work from Klaus Kugel, but sadly, this is only an oddity rather than the rule. Later on in the same piece "Nightmare", Berger is left alone to play out a wad of sweeter-than-sweet high-pitched vibraphone motifs, while Kugel simply provides standard rhythmic back-up on percussion. This is nothing more than keeping time. C'mon now, is this what improvised music should really be about? I mean, arrangements sound good. Certainly, the leader tries to keep things interesting by injecting various elements into the pieces [tiny off-shoot duo and trio combinations of players that are supposed to rally together], but the end result is missing that certain "oomph". "Fellowship" is recommended for listeners that favour "lighter" shades of improvised music.
