SAO PAULO UNDERGROUND
Sauna: Um, Dois, Tres

Transplanted to Brazil, multi-instrumentalist Rob Mazurek already gave us a taste test of what this record would hold with the release of last year's project Mandarin Movie. Loud, unpredictably varied and right over the edge, the music was like an accident waiting to happen. Combining forces with percussionist / electronics whiz and trumpeter Mauricio Takara, with Sao Paulo Underground, he takes the listener on a journey to the wild exotic destinations of his mind. It's not enough that the group's debut has plenty of improvised passages, what's actually great about it is Mazurek has allowed his surroundings to infiltrate his creative process. Brazil has seeped into his consciousness and it doesn't want to leave. "Balao de Gas" features a thick wall of pounding Latin beats, while a softly flowing trumpet signals its presence on a cloud above. "Afrihouse" may be mistaken for a dark, early 70's Miles jam, while the title track is a free, go-for-broke improvised session that features a ton of percussion [mixed nicely up-front, for that powerful feeling], along with wildly blaring trumpet and some words of wisdom that are blurred out underneath the madness. Weirdest track of the bunch is the closing "Numa Grana", where for 5 minutes all that is heard are splices of vocals [I thought I heard motherfucker in there a few times but I can't be sure] drowned out in a softest imaginable, subconscious-like haze. This whole soup is put through Mazurek's laptop and assembled in what sounds like a messy fashion. Don't get me wrong, the production is fine; it's just the way dozens of ideas are presented seems a tad chaotic [which was probably Mazurek's intent from the start]. Yearning and passion for music is what drives this session through and through. Another fine effort from the man who sometime ago set Chicago on fire.
