AMPARANOIA
La Vida Te Da

[Wrasse Records, www.wrasserecords.com]

Winners of BBC's prestigious World Music Award for Europe last year, Spanish outfit Amparanoia is unbelievably hot. Mestizo [form of music they preach] is meant to be practiced right on the dance floor with your partner. When things heat up, both of you will ultimately land in the bedroom [or the kitchen table, or the stairs or the car, whichever you prefer]. There's no denying it - that's the sort of effect the music has on people. Magnetic vocalist Amparo Sánchez ensures the music is kept at a boiling point at all times. In fact, when a ballad like "Tiempo pa mi" comes along, it simply serves as a cool-off period between the maddening fury of bodies grinding against one another. Brass section is unbelievably hot. Swerving trumpets are heard blasting all throughout the session. Amparo knows how to soothe and grind but most importantly, she has that undeniable listener friendly quality in her voice that invites everyone onto the dance floor. It's not odd at all that I hear elements of Cuban and Mexican flavours in this music [the band played both places on a number of occasions]. It's like the freedom of the rustling palm trees along the Cuban coast that makes people want to leave the island paradise so badly. Even their interpretation of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" is wildly scorching. The rhythm is so furiously lively and deeply organic, you just know this band is not capable of serving up anything tepid. Amparanoia is a breath of fresh air in a stale room full of dust. Breathe in. Exhale. As any DJ in a good Latin club would say, "Get up and move your ass!"
