GEORG GRAEWE / ERNST REIJSEGER / GERRY HEMINGWAY
Continuum

[Winter & Winter, www.winterandwinter.com]

I stopped counting the releases [official and bootlegs] this trio has released. In fact, when you take a look at their catalogue, at least half of their work is out of print. Their outstanding 1989 debut "Sonic Fiction" [hathut] has been out of print for ages, as is "Flex 27" [Random Acoustics] and "Zwei Nachte in Berlin" [Sound Aspects]. Whether these omissions are crimes against the larger public wanting and needing to hear this music, I don't know. All I know is, this music needs to be heard and has to be judged on its own terms but if the listener is left without access to their rich catalogue, it will simply wane by the side of the road. Having said that, the latest offering from the trio is a pleasant shock to the system indeed. I thought the trio was dormant [or even dead]. In fact, I though when I saw them perform last, back in 1999; that was supposed to be their 10-year anniversary as well as a farewell tour. Honesty, I thought they disbanded due to financial impossibilities of touring - Hemingway lives in US, while the other two musicians reside in Europe. You have to remember this is a trio that doesn't practice what they play before hand. There are no discussions or deep analysis of what may happen on stage before they go live. Instead, they work on instinct and intuition alone. They listen and react. They react and they listen to one another. I shouldn't be surprised at how frequently Gerry Hemingway uses celesta and marimba. There was foreshadowing of this on his previous quartet releases. The subtlety of the execution sucks the listener in immediately. Reijseger is his usual adventurous self on the cello. He doesn't stray far from the other two, but when he hits a stride, it's as if he's secluded and playing to his own peculiar beat. Georg Graewe's piano clicking is as warm when the strings are caressed and stroked inside the piano, as when the keys are massaged on the outside. Each piece is like a colour. "Continuum Phase One" resembles a light grey, while "Continuum Phase Seven" is more like a dark green. "Continuum Phase Nine" reflects a light aqua, as the trio gets off the ground and plays something that may be confused with swing-type improvisation. Trio specializes in communication of the highest order. The question whether this is a one-off reunion or whether the trio plan on recording more is a hard one to answer at this point. I can simply point the way to "Continuum" and tell you to get a hold of this recording quickly before another crucial document in modern music history goes out of print.
