Songs of Eta Carinae

[Beta-lactam Ring Records, www.blrrecords.com]

If My Cat is an Alien could do a triple CD set dedicated to various galaxies ["Cosmological Eye Trilogy" released by Last Visible Dog], then Denver's Orbit Service can surely do a single album dedicated to a huge star named Eta Carinae. Band's leader [songwriter, lead singer and guitarist] Randall Frazier remarked to me over an e-mail exchange about this record: "The album really has nothing to do with the star in the literal sense. The star itself "eta carinae" is sort of in a half life/half dead state that fluctuates between dormant/calm times and violent outbursts. Sort of like the music, I guess. Sometimes I feel like that describes me. Half dead. The album for me is about personal struggles, some dealing with emotional stuff or relationships, not necessarily between a man/woman, but in a wider sense, like interpersonally between humans in general. My personal take on those things or the way I see them. Humanity in general.
Some of the writing pertains more to a frustration with the world that we as humans have created - a filthy, greedy, unhappy place - that will no doubt come to a burning and polluted end. We're already well on our way. We're stupid monkeys that turned our world into a trash can for greed. I'm not making a political statement or anything. This is human nature and we're all greedy and stupid. That's the saddest part of all. Some of us, admittedly, are more greedy and stupid than others, but humans in general are no good...except for my wife, of course." Heavy handed approach to the musical craft, if you ask me, but that's what this music is like. Serious. Grave. Little sunshine peers out from underneath the cobwebs of guitars and heavily laden percussion. Frazier's vocals are caressing one minute, while overtly grating the next. The man is pissed. He's got every right to be. The band follows suit, with an ever changing monstrous collage of sometimes quiet, sometimes loud rock assaults, served up on an original platter of musical ambience. At times, the band delivers a hard-driving, heart- beat like pulse, while on other pieces, they're an unstoppable, full of fury, metal-mayhem machine. Best to be taken as a whole [rather than simply one piece at a time], "Songs of Eta Carinae" serves up a juicy plate of slowly enrapturing madness. Though controlled, it could blow into a volcano at any minute.
