THE IMPOSSIBLE SHAPES
Tum

[Secretly Canadian, www.secretlycanadian.com]

Sixth album into their lucrative underground career, The Impossible Shapes are back with a home recording [actually recorded at the Goatmother Shack] simply called "Tum". Folk revival is doing very well, thanks for asking. These guys are another spoke in the wheel of that enormous machine, which is actually a good thing, considering all the crap that's out there in the mainstream to dig through. Relaxed and loosely formed lyrics and song formats that are definitely organic permeate the release from beginning to end. Echo-like reverb is heard throughout. Occasional banjo and organ work help to make the record sound like some sort of a throwback to the 60's. [The band is apparently great live.] Chris Barth possesses vocal chords that are as sweet as they are raspy and barrenly seductive. Tambourine beats are everywhere too, which means hippie days are here again. Whether you want to call this country or blues-tinged pop doesn't make a difference. What's wonderful is the album's 17 tracks sparsely cover a half-an-hour time length. The brevity of the songs ensures nobody is bored as each idea, each premise is covered quite completely in a short span. Very succinct, The Impossible Shapes take the listener for a whirlwind ride full of adventure and a promise for a better, brighter tomorrow.
