THE CONGOS & FRIENDS
Fisherman Style

How do you take one-rhythm track and make a two album set out of it? Simply take The Congos' "Fisherman" track and supplement it with Lee Perry's rhythm track from 1977 [taken from that very same track] and you've got yourself a superb smorgasbord full of deeper than deep reggae flavours. For explanation, one-rhythm albums are those where many artists sing or deejay over the same rhythm track. These have been staples of Jamaican music scene for at least the last three decades, most visible in the dancehall scene. Mark Ernestus and Moritz van Oswald spent hundreds of studio hours fine-tuning and cleaning up original Jamaican master tapes. Results spread over the two disc set are nothing short of breath-taking. Set has been programmed so that the first disc features better known reggae artists, while the second one [with the exception of Gregory Isaacs and Upsetters] features fresher talent. All tracks deal with the premise of "give a man fish and he'll be fed but teach him how to fish and he'll not go hungry". As Freddie McGregor sings "Jah make me strong. Trust in Jah Lord. Jah make me whole", the reverberating echo dub makes the tune enticing. Dean Fraser's instrumental "Fisherman's Anthem" makes allusions to Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" [in fact, the same rhythm is shared on many of these tracks], while Sugar Minott's "Captain of the Ship" is a strong up-front dub-wise in- your-face call. One of my personal favourites is Horace Andy's take on "Love Love Love". His sweet as honey vocals attack the mighty dub anthem with great force. Though the first disc is steeped with the masters, the second disc isn't any worse off just because fresher talent is featured. Full of fast riddim-story telling, Paul St Hilaire's "Carthage" is a strong contender as is Ricky Chaplin's "Behold Jah Live", which sputters in a reggae storm of fury. To end it all on a good note, Upsetters deliver "Bring the Mackaback" - sweetly flowing dub that reverberates on and on and on. Lovingly realized record with a ton of reggae and dub goodness, "Fisherman Style" has its heart in all the right places.
