ÖLVIS
Ölvis

Orlygur Thor Orlygsson has the smarts to call his one-man band Ölvis. You might as well, seeing how nobody will ever confuse his sounds with those made the hip-shaking, blue-suede-shoe wearing king of pop. Ölvis is sombre, mysterious sounds that come from space, while Elvis made sounds that were down to earth, belly and fat-reducing rock or pop or whatever you want to call it in retrospect. Now, I know I'm going back in time here [this self-titled released was issued nearly two years ago], but there are times when it's simply essential to give credit where it's due or simply to mention something that one feels is crucial. Last year's "The Blue Sound" made me stand up and notice this little known Icelandic artist. To be honest, it's nobody's fault that Ölvis is little known. Fact is his records are issued by a small British label. I don't figure much money goes into marketing and the widest exposure the guy gets is through rare live appearances. I've yet to hear any of his music on the radio, but then again I don't listen much to radio [and community radio in Canada has yet to pick up on Ölvis]. So, what is the phenomenon known as Ölvis and why should you really become good friends? Personally, my friendship with Ölvis is enriched by a simple fact - there is so much warmth in every sound he puts to tape. In fact, it's difficult to throw the blanket off once you're covered in Ölvis goodness. Sheets of synths, modified guitars and some far-off percussion makes for an unmistakable sound that's not easy to forget. Everything seems to be recorded in a sort of a cavernous location, which modifies his music even more. When Thor sings, it's always in Icelandic. The vocals seem to be processed heavily in such a fashion that they too become an essential instrument of sorts. Majority of the pieces are still instrumentals, but more so than on "The Blue Sound", here they're even more minimal, luscious and equally orchestral in scope. Drowsy, calm and to the point, Ölvis is the bread you're missing for your fresh butter.
