What's the ruckus all about when people mention the name Danielson? It's about an extended family of musicians/friends/groupies centered around one Daniel Smith. Apparently this guy has been called a Christian songwriter for one reason or another, but we'll steer clear of that facet for the purpose of this review. Going under various names - Danielson Famile, Brother Danielson - Smith [guitars, vocals] enlists the help of family members - percussionists Andrew Smith and David Smith, along with a whole bunch of other Smiths [also family] - Lenny, Lilly, Ida and Elin, all on vocals and clapping support. What Smith and crew come up with is some of the most unique and archaically childish music to come along with Daniel Johnston. Unlike Daniel though, there is no naivety about the lyrics and the production values are somewhat better. Passages of orchestral glory are interwoven between slabs of molten rock and pop. Choruses abound at every turn as many songs have what sounds like kids singing full frontal. I mean, there's no shame in using kids in a big production, as long as everyone gets paid fair share. Smith's vocals are kind, spirited and always excitable. Almost like a little kid himself, he retains an aura of stubbornly persuasive sweetness. While "Two Sitting Ducks" has a climax of orgasmic proportions [complete with string instruments running wildly all over the place], "Did I Step on Your Trumpet" is a sweet pop tune about forgiving all the crap that may have happened between you and your enemies. The band is so serious about the forgiveness part, they will mail the person you offended a "Did I Step on Your Trumpet" button as a way of mending ways. Believe it or not, I'm actually convinced by Smith's genuine musical offering. It's not exactly high science, but it's something so unique and so damn lovable, you just need to wrap your arms around this stuff.
