KK NULL / DANIEL MENCHE
Raijin

[Asphodel, www.asphodel.com]

As with his previous effort "Concussions", percussionist Daniel Menche returns with a noisy vengeance. This time around joined by destruction-percussion expert KK Null, their collaboration is an immensely satisfying one, albeit a disturbing effort. Starting from scratch, the two amass an amazing array of percussive tools - aided by electronics - to shake, rattle and roll your brain out of your head. Not necessarily easy listening, ‘Raijin" is something that grows on you - slowly - yet still. Reverb, constant modifications, shifts in pitch and feedback-totality, the two men are more about the extremes than anything else. When these two rage, their rage is full on. There is no medium heat on this sucker. Though many of the moments feature the extremes, it's the more subtle ones that have me excited. The more minimal percussive work on the second track [all tracks are just numbers] is worked around a trance routine as is much of the longish fourth track. That's the beauty of this music. As extreme and vile and packed with totality of noise, as frightening as it may appear on the surface, there actually exists a soothing element in it that allows listener to fall into a sedated state. KK Null's abrasive trumpet that is stuck in a particular tone is something that gives this record an altogether different angle. Sure, it cuts like a saw, but its industrial quality actually allows much room to be explored inside of a vacuum. When KK Null utilizes the trumpet, there's no stopping him. He's a barrelling train running down full speed on the tracks. Although the record is marketed with a "pure thunder" phrase, I tend to disagree. Too much beauty and calmness is found underneath the boiling surface to allow for quick catch-phrasing. Dense: yes. Dangerous: maybe. Primal: yes. Enjoyable: always!
