MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS / GEORGE LEWIS / ROSCOE MITCHELL

Open improvisation is a term that comes up a lot when reading about the latest disc from three AACM giants Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis and Roscoe Mitchell. "Streaming" is not so much about self-indulgence and self-centered improvisation, where each particular member of the grouping steals as much of ensemble's share as humanly possible. None of these musicians grabs, steals or forfeits their right to improvise freely. Rather, they freely and openly communicate their musical thoughts and ideas in an open scenario - where each one is taken seriously, where they are openly shared and expanded upon and where music creation process is of the utmost importance. Though they've worked with each other on various occasions [mostly throughout late 70's to early 80's] on each other's albums, it wasn't until their performance at the 2003 Venice Biennale that provided a push for these three to perform and actually record something. This record marks the first instance where each piece was freely improvised, without any pre-planned notions or written scores. Nothing within sight indicates that written materials entered the studio along with the trio and by all indications, their version of open improvisation works well. I can't name any particular highlights of the record without being unfair to the recording as a whole. Throughout five extended pieces, the trio rivets in the open grasses of delicately stroked bells and various other percussion, in the hushed trombone playing, through to the circular-swirls of alto and soprano winds. Minimal in one instance, while being overtly brimming with packed effects the next. If I was to say the laptop processing of trombone, bamboo flute and saxophones on "Bound" is overtly impressive, I would also have to add that the mish-mash of electronic sounds combined with flute and a barreling of piano on "Soundhear" is spectacular in its execution. All of these are but tiny snippets of the trio's mastery. Every single sound represents the sweat and toil these three artists have put in to get the finest possible sound imaginable. Creativity flows freely as instantaneous improvisation takes the stage front and centre.
