Lucky Pierre or L. Pierre for short is actually a project by Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap. This guy admitted once that he doesn't think there's anything bad about chill-out music. "I think it's that people are trying too hard - I guess it's trying to appeal to people who are flat out fucked from working." Having said that, L. Pierre's latest offering is a bit too busy to make it into the realms of the ambient music genre. Nonetheless, there is something so peculiarly quietly resolving to it, you can't help but relax and chill to its vibes. The album's concept was nature and the great outdoors and particularly the sea. Moffat bought himself a little Minidisc recorder and used it to record some outdoors ambience. For the project, he assembled a group made up of Alan Barr on cello, bassist Stevie Jones and trumpeter Allan Wylie. Moffat plays harmonium, drums, keyboards and percussion. All players come together, while seemingly they play a separate space. On the closing "Drift", Barr's cello seems somewhat misplaced from the rest of the group, as he's dabbling on a canvass that's running away from him. Many of the pieces have this over-worked, fuzzy quality to them. "Ache" is persistently being re-defined as a mournful ballad, though the way it's mixed, it actually disturbs rather than soothes. The album's longest piece - the nearly 12 minute "Weir's Way" - has a distinct, orchestral feel that features very simple percussion [a tambourine being struck in constant rhythm], while Wylie plays a distant trumpet melody above the proceedings. I'm not too sure what to make of the album in terms of sticking it into a particular category. It's too eclectic for jazz. It's not experimental enough for a field recording and it doesn't have enough balls to be defined under the experimental category. It's also too safe to be called weird. All I know is if you take the pieces away from the complete puzzle, the result seems to be less than its sum.
