DRAKKAR SAUNA
Jabraham Lincoln

[Marriage Records, www.marriagerecs.com]

Wallace Cochrane and Jeffrey Stolz who make up the backbone of Drakkar Sauna have a quirky side about them. Sure, the duo plays folk music infused with a sense of days gone by, but their sense of humour is where it's really at. Take the title for instance. Who the hell was Jabraham Lincoln? Is that black and white photo on the back cover really good ol' Jab himself? Then, there are titles of the songs. "Teach Me Your Legs", "Decoy Schmecoy", "There's Not Enough Tits on a Wolf" and "Get Kazoo People" are just some of the titles that are sure to raise an eyebrow or have people howling in the streets. Finally, we come to the most crucial part of the package - the music itself. On a Neil Young and Billy Bragg slant, they rave on about subjects closest to their hearts. Music is ear-friendly enough, with a sparseness of acoustic guitars, some farfisa, mandolin, glockenspiel and even slim moments where percussion is used [though these are few]. It's a fairly bare set-up that allows the simplicity of the songs to come through. An abundance of special guests assure the album has a livelier feel. Banjo player Mike West impresses on one track, while bassist Chris Kuhlman infuses the music with that bit of a fat backbone on several of the pieces as well. For the most part, it's the voices you're paying attention. When the two sing, it's in perfect and total unison, which makes me think the duo was enrolled in a choir in a past lifetime. Straight-ahead and pleasing all at once, the album proves complexity is redundant when it comes to articulate song craft. "Thanks to the United States government for their support of the arts" is a statement that's found inside the CD sleeve. Is this another joke or did these guys really get funding?
