John Butcher has rarely worked in a duo setting with a percussionist. Sure, he's recorded with heavyweights in the percussion world - Eddie Prévost, Gino Robair and Gerry Hemingway - but these were rare occasions indeed. It's great then to find him playing with another key figure in today's world of jazz and improvised music, Paal Nilssen-Love. What's at work on their new release "Concentric" is a field of keen listening skills and honing in on details. Both players play off one another and adaptability is the key word. While Butcher plays his squeaky, high-pitched, circular-motion soprano on "Point Lobos", Nilseen-Love answers in turn with cymbal scrapes that match Butcher's playing perfectly. When he switches gears and picks up his tenor, Butcher is an angry beast, barrelling constant lines of attack that the percussionist then disperses with thunderous, repetitive patterns. The delicacy on "Mono Lake" is commendable as well. While Butcher blows a steady swirl of soprano flutters, Nilssen-Love answers with light pounds on the skins and a few scrapes. Their commonality and unified purpose is stupendous. I can't isolate one single minute where these two sound like they're thrown off course. Never do they head off in separate directions. One of the best duo wind-percussion albums I'd heard in decades.
For inaugural recording on Clean Feed Record's new sub-label, European Echoes, Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado gets his chance in the spotlight. Supported by a heavy-weight rhythm section - bassist Kent Kessler and percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love - on "Teatro", he's playing with fire. Constant barrages of heavy-handed tenor bursts get top marks. These are especially pleasing when the rhythm section steps in to offer their undivided support. While Kessler's bass wallop is rhythm-heavy [all of the four tracks on the disc have a pounding rhythm], Nilssen-Love takes a different approach. Though much of the time, he's keeping good time with the other two, on many occasions, he breaks away from the pack and plays his own thing. This is where the fun begins. His articulate, non-linear and skewed work of prowess on the drum set churn against the grain and force the other two to play to a different beat. He still scrapes and experiments on the drum set, but with greater restraint. [Nilssen-Love is as adaptable in this setting as he is on the record with Butcher.] Only a ballad, such as the one presented in the form of the title track shows a warm and fuzzy picture of the trio. Though each member has particular ideas they need to get out, unified together in one concert hall three years ago in Oporto, they were a united mass of improvisers. These are improvisers who believe common language is key in achieving a solid mass. Who would've believed this was the first time the trio ever played together?
