HORKESKART
Live in Solitude

CINC
Polyphonic Poetry

[Amorfon, www.amorfon.com]

One of the stranger propositions I'd heard all year are these two releases. Both released on a Japanese label and each one features slightly skewed versions of Balkan pop or choral music.
Horkeškart [meaning orchestra plus the punk group Skart being short for "your shit - your responsibility"] is a Belgrade based conceptual group that features a large choral/orchestral faction. Within it are dozens of young people, idealists, musicians, singers, amateurs, and just about anyone who is willing to convey a love of their homeland. Recorded in Stuttgart, Germany at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, the group at the time featured around 45 singers. Skart actually started back in the early 90's but has left the Horkeškart community for various reasons in late 2006. These are songs of ideals. They are songs of revolution and "reconstruction" of 40s and 50s Yugoslavia. These are songs of poetry, punk tunes and covers. Most of these folk tunes have been all but erased from national radio. Idealism catches up to the band on "Let's Sharpen Our Scythes":
"Let's sharpen our scythes,
Wheat already ripens
And it's already harvest-time!
Let the steel start singing,
Let the song resound,
Let's sharpen our scythes,
The Wheat is ripe!
To battle for life in freedom!"
The cry goes from village to village
Or else we are in for slavery and suffering,
Let's sharpen our scythes,
The Wheat is ripe!"
Sung in French, "Brave Margot" has a sweet rendering chorus that wraps itself around the whole tune. With school choir na?veté, the youth sing of hope, passion, wheat fields, work to be done and socialistic ideals. Even their cover of Kraftwerk's "Antenna" is rousing and appropriately joyful. The thing that catches one off guard about these tunes is just how ecstatic these people are on stage. Have they forgotten the evils the communists have rendered on their country? Perhaps they remember too well the rape nationalists have done on their land as well? Fuck ideals. The wheat is ripe. "Live is Solitude" is a bountiful harvest.
Cinc is a Serbian quartet that plays barren post-rock tunes in a folk vain. Made up of four unique individuals, they play a variety of instruments - acoustic guitar, bass, drums, violin and a harp. Their third release "Polyphonic Poetry" is a take on barren proportions. They asked themselves, how do we go about putting poetry to music in as simple a way as possible. Lead vocalist Irena Vanic does a commendable job at handling the highs and the lows of their musical poems. Add to this the striking violins of Srdjan Stojanovic and minimal percussion of Luka Stanisavljevic and the folk-like guitar strumming of Djordie Ilic and everything becomes crystal clear. These guys want to break new ground outside their native country. Lyrics of the songs are sung in various languages - from English, through Serbian, Japanese, French, German and Czech. Poems that are used come from Rabelais, Villon, Goethe and Baudelaire, as well as some originals from the band themselves. Japanese multi-instrumentalist Yoshio Machida even contributes some fine steel pan interludes in a few key moments. Musically this bunch reminds me of a more intelligent Cure in the early 80's. This quirky, up-beat music is definitely worth a listen. Highly recommended for those with a curiosity for music that is off-the-wall but never off the map.
