TOM RECCHION
Sweetly doing nothing

[Schoolmap, www.schoolmap.org]

Co-founder of the legendary LAFMS [Los Angeles Free Music Society], sonic explorer Tom Recchion inaugurates a new experimental label Schoolmap. Having collaborated with people such as John Duncan, Smegma, Rova, Keiji Haino, David Toop, Oren Ambarchi and Christian Marclay, Recchion has now turned his sights for an almost entirely solo record. Though multi-instrumentalist Max Eastley appears on two of the six tracks, this very much feels like one guy sitting in a room, looking for the perfect array of sounds. Whether those sounds are found [chirping birds on "Ho Ho 66"] or real [tapes on "Underwater Girls" and tinkling percussion on "Jazz 10,000 A.D."], Recchion is in the genre of perfect mood creation. Sourcing out the "right" sound for the moment is just not enough to keep him satiated. What he's looking for is that ominous mood, which is achieved perfectly throughout the record's hour long duration. Recchion is using his Powerbook and sequencing software here for the first time and he claims this worked well in that it helped to serve his "interest in loopy tonal mood music." Sound art purveyor, Max Eastley plays "invented instruments" on two of the stronger pieces in the set. With its heavy tribal elements, the opening "The Elephant God" ends up sounding like an even more chilled Horizon 222 [whatever happened to them by the way?], while "Oozing" - with its glitches and watery imagery - is a soundtrack to a futuristic space odyssey. Abstract shifts in tones and timbres allow for a movie quality to shine through on this record. Whether deliberately set out as an imaginary soundtrack or not, makes no difference in the world. What counts are the blissful, space-age, psychotically calming sounds that filter from the speakers.
