MONTA
The Brilliant Masses

[Klein Records, www.kleinrecords.com]

I've got to be honest. There are certain albums that I forget about quite quickly. Unless a record makes an immediate impression on me, it's bound to get buried underneath the stash of new releases on my shelves, beside my bed, on the floor, or wherever I make room. Monta's second release is one such record. Former singer for Miles, Tobias Kuhn's release under the Monta moniker sadly enough just wilted away. I'd listened to it a couple of months back. Then, it got lost in the shuffle. Other releases came up that I was more excited about and "The Brilliant Masses" was simply forgotten. I dug it up recently and I must say, I was unfair in my initial assessment. At first, I took Monta to be a dour, lifeless form that was meant to be used to soothe away the pain after a break-up from a sore relationship. Sure, Kuhn's voice is no sunshine in the sky above, but there is hope in these lifeless songs. Who would want to say good morning to a stranger or sing about a "Kiss Goodnight" if they didn't have at least an ounce of hope in them? OK, so these songs are little mirrors into the human soul. I can analyze Kuhn's lyrics forever, but I'll still not be closer to finding the real truth. There's still a bit of hope for redemption on these bleak shores. Monta's sound is that of wilting leaves falling from the trees in the fall. It's acoustic with electric elements. While electric guitars are used predominately, the atmosphere is bleak and dire. This isn't Tim Buckley territory. However, Monta could be Sodastream's next door neighbours. It's pop-folk-rock rolled into one. For the days you feel depressed and for those days when you're simply feeling sorry for yourself, Monta's release is a perfect drug. Because I have these tendencies to run into depression head-on, this isn't a record that I'll bury under any one of my piles any time soon.
