HAL RAMMEL
Like Water Tightly Wound

[Crouton Music, www.croutonmusic.com]

As a designer of musical instruments, other than Hans Reichel perhaps, Hal Rammel has little equals. Already, he gave birth to the triolin, bibliolin, snath, aerolin and the hydro-aerolin. Instrument he plays on his latest 10" LP is a C-shaped, wooden block that has metal spokes attached to the top. Metal spokes are arranged in an irregular circle like pattern though even that in itself doesn't explain anything that happens from the sound perspective on this album. When I first heard this album, I was washing dishes and inadvertently broke a wine glass in the process. As the glass broke and fell into the sink, the sound of Rammel striking the pokes of his innovation struck out from the speakers. Was that the glass shattering in the sink or did the sound come from my loudspeakers? The way Rammel approaches this music is with a large amount of precousiousness. Every poke, every glittering stumble has a meaning. Is he searching out his way or did he have a map drawn up ahead of time? At certain points, as the music moves along, the sounds resemble popping bubbles, while in other sections; I hear a certain amount of force being applied to the metal spokes - almost with abrupt vigour. I hate to use the word pensive but that's exactly the feeling I'm left with at tail end of both sides of the 10" record. This is music for which descriptions are useless - a record that by its existence alone fails a description merely in words. [If I were a great dancer, I could do some movements that describe the feelings that pop up when hearing the music.] Perhaps there is some truth to that breaking wine glass and Rammel had that in mind when putting this music together. Whatever the case, the record is beautifully packaged inside of a turn of the century paper sleeve. Accompanied by a photograph of his invention and a detailed description of the process, it comes as beautifully packaged as the music contained inside. In a nutshell, an instant classic record.
