JENNIFER GENTLE
A New Astronomy
[A Silent Place, asilentplace.it]
To understand the sonic place Jennifer Gentle is coming from, we have to
read the linear notes inside their latest release: "Dedicated to Giovanni
Paneroni, amateur astronomer and misunderstood genius. He was born in 1871
and made a living out of peddling sweets and ice-creams around Northern
Italy's towns and villages. In his free time, he developed his own,
revolutionary astronomical theories: the Earth is flat, surrounded on every
corner by perennial glaciers; the sun is nothing more than a small silver
ball with a 2 meter diameter and a weight of approximately 14 kilos;
Copernicus was wrong: the entire official astronomical science is just a
bunch of lies; planets don't move, stars are just little fires hung in the
sky, the universe doesn't exist . He also invented a new solar compass based
on his "extraordinary discoveries". In his unstoppable attempts to promote
the truth, Paneroni tried everything and suffered countless humiliations: he
stalked professors, was arrested and became a well known character in many
Italian universities. After some years spent in a mental institution, he
died in 1950. Thousands of people from all over the country attended his
funeral." Surely, you'd expect Jennifer Gentle to break out with space
melodies and anthems of distant galaxies, and that's precisely what they do
on this re-issue of an ultra-rare Sub Pop release. Italian duo - made up of
guitarist/vocalist Marco Fasolo and percussionist Alessio Gastaldello -
share many of the same aesthetic qualities apparent on any of their native
musician, My Cat is an Alien's records. The drone is there. The constant,
warm and fuzzy feedback is apparent. On a track like "The Cannibal Club"
they develop a sudden love for Loop as for a solid two minutes, they rock
the house with heavy, pouncing rhythms. An ominous opener - eight minute
"Lost Aurora" - chimes away with humming of strewn-out guitars and distant
buzzing. Through time, the piece develops a hypnotic quality and helps to
define the best characteristic of this band. With its bleak and cool icy
atmosphere "Church of the Black Emptiness" conjures up memories of early
Main. As the guitar parts fall into a steady pattern, all one can do is
concentrate on the malicious drone they end up creating. As long as Fasolo
doesn't sing [and he only does so on a few numbers], we're in the clear.
For the most part, his vocal prowess takes away from the weird serenity of
the overall atmosphere. As the album glides away with the frolicking,
guitar-twanging "Me and Joe on the Moon", you begin to realize something -
this duo is made up of two psychos in a positive sense of that word.
