F.S. Blumm meets Luca Fadda

Melancholia is something that I've always associated with the music of F.S. Blumm. His latest venture, a duo outing with trumpeter Luca Fadda is no different. Composed of two longer numbers and four short interludes, the album takes listeners on a journey of sadness, boredom, numbness and eye-closing music. Along with bass, F.S. Blumm plays mechanical toys. He also plays a Russian table-soccer game. Many of the sounds have child-like qualities. They may not be na?ve per se, but they are simple and non-intrusive. Fadda's trumpet is not invasive as well. When he does play, it's with gentility and lots of forethought. With its appearing-disappearing, on-again, off-again trajectory, Jon Hassel's sound comes to mind. Blumm sounds like he's having a ton of fun. The walking bass line that's the backbone of "Giorgi and Lucy" is hollow and produces a loopy consistency. Mechanical toys implemented are more akin to warbled, mating frogs on a lonely lake. Much of this music sounds as if both men were searching blindly for directions on a map. Without a compass, a flashlight even, distant, lonely and pensive, their unique musical vision is worth the long trek.
