ORLANDO JULIUS
Super Afro Soul

[Vampisoul, www.vampisoul.com]

Combining material from late 60's to early 70's, "Super Afro Soul" is here to do justice to a band leader that has more often than not been under-recognized, if ignored altogether. Borrowing his name from his countryman, Nigerian actor Orlando Martins, Julius pushed the pride of his native-land front and foremost in his music. Though this is less evident on the first disc of this double CD compilation, it is still heavily pressed into every track of the music. First disc is more song driven, as Julius pumps out the beats together with his Modern Aces. Formed in 1964, the band was an equal measure of jazz, beats, township vibes and indigenous sounds. Beginnings of Afro-beat were certainly at the heart of what the Modern Aces were playing. The sound was fresh, full of creativity and positive vibes. Though his first instruments were drums, he later switched to the flute, before settling on his ultimate dream, which was alto sax. First disc gyrates with a huge brass section that plays along to the multiplex percussive beats from a number of players. Congas, bongos, drum sets - they're all here. Wild, unstoppable bunch of songs that even includes a loose take on Smokey Robinson's "My Girl". The second disc is a compilation of tracks from three Polygram records Orlando recorded in Lagos. "Orlando's Afro Ideas 1969 - 72" is much looser, as the numbers are stretched out in length. Players in his Afro Sounders are wicked. It's obvious these musicians trained together for long periods of time. They were great in taking direction from Julius but they also knew how to play free. Taking cues from Fela Kuti's ensembles as well as free jazz of late 60's, along with Afrobeat all around them, Julius created music that gyrated with maximum doses of life. This was funk with heavy doses of brass, with percussion that built a steady beat, with musicians that were devoted to the musical communion. Later on in the 70's, Julius formed Umoja [which later became Oja] and toured the US with people such as Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Gil Scott-Heron and the Bar Keys. He also worked with Hugh Masakela, but ultimately it was work with his own bands in Lagos that broke new ground for musicians that followed. To hear an evolution of a master musician and to get a grasp on his best work that came very early on in his musical life, "Super Afro Soul" is absolutely essential?an instant classic.
