Theremin in the Rain

Probably best known for his pieces Long Aeolian Piano and Speaker Swinging, Canadian composer Gordon Monahan takes a slightly different approach on this project. Premiered at 2003's Open Ears Festival in Kitchener, "Theremin in the Rain" is focused around a theremin that controls a MIDI interface. In turn, this interface "plays" a number of sound sculptures. Add to this equation piano wires that are played by MIDI-controlled solenoids and MIDI-controlled water drop that play collection of amplified plates and you've got yourself a sharp-turn, left-field recording. Ultimately, the center-piece is the theremin, which controls entire installation in electronic fashion. Live on stage, there is a dancer who manipulates resonance of an extended piano string by pulling an electric motor along its surface and a DJ who mixes recordings as accompaniment to the piece. There are quite a variety of sounds on this piece. From the usual spooky theremin sound, through to wobbly sounds of piano strings being forcefully manipulated, to a rain storm protruding onto a hard surface, at every turn there is something new and off-the-wall to discover. "Long String Motor" for instance features a low-rumbling sound originating when the motor is shifted back and forth across the piano string. Sound is ominous and quite heavy. By comparison, "Flex String" features a wallop of percussive sounds that are brisk and leave a multiplex echo effect as an aftertaste. Quite an adventurous piece, which leaves more questions behind than answers. Where the hell was I in May of 2003 when this piece was being premiered?
