YOSHI WADA
Lament for the Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile

[EM Records, www.emrecords.net]

Despite of what the name implies, elephantine crocodile is not a cross-breed of two animals. What it is actually is Yoshi Wada's musical creation that produces the most singular of sounds. Japanese composer and instrumentalist, Wada created his concoction out of cane reed pipes and a variety of plumbing and fittings, which are piped by a huge air compressor. He called it an "adapted bagpipe with sympathy". Recorded in Buffalo in 1981 in a place called Dry Pool [basically an empty swimming pool], the album's music is something that is intense and really quite spiritual in nature. Wada spent a few days literally sleeping at the pool to prepare for the two part suite that was recorded for the long out-of-print India Navigation LP. He wanted to become one with his physical surroundings and the acoustics of the pool do his music great justice. First piece, "Singing" features Wada's voice in a lamenting over-tone chants. Over the course of the next half-an-hour, he bellows out some powerful intonations. Having studied with Indian guru Pandit Pran Nath, one can hear a raga-like progression leading up to peaks and valleys of the piece. The way his chords crescendo around certain passages is truly incredible. One can clearly picture an empty pool and an image of a lone Wada sitting on the cold floor improvising ominous over-tones of the piece. When we arrive at "Bagpipe", the composer switches directions. In using his unique elephantine crocodile contraption, Wada pumps out fully sustained drones in droves. Pitch gets a tweaking from time to time but the focus remains the same. Meditative, highly addictive and brim full of drones, Wada's voice accompanying the bag-pipe instrument rises and falls. It's medium cool and then it heats up. It rages with the sameness of satiation and it brims with a primal urge. By mid-point, your ears fool you into believing you're hearing buzz-saw cutting through wood, but don't be too easily fooled as the sounds are all encompassing. Composer knew that through this piece he would build his own unique sound-world, where perceptions are tricked, where ears and minds are conned. Both pieces are now expanded for this edition, along with a crystalline re-mastering job. Having been out of print for so long, Yoshi Wada's masterpiece shines amongst the sea of rubble of other music that can't quite measure up to this immense work.
