CIRCLE
Panic
Rakennus (Live)

Finland's pride, metal-meets-everything else kings Circle returns with a duo of new releases. Each one is as confounding [and confusing] as the next.
"Panic" starts of gently enough, with three numbers worth of ambience and persuasive imagery. "Black Tape" has a tendency to caress the mind with somber effects, while "Pigs in the Paper" builds up to an onslaught that's to come in a minute. With "Neverending Dinner", the band begins six pieces of speed metal mayhem. This is fury at its best. Sikio is pissed off about something - too much dinner? Feeding his rabbit? Breathing? - and he's not shy in expressing his hate and fury for just about everything around him. Pounding the listener into submission with furious rhythm section and synths that are completely over-the-top [and which in some parts are more aggressive than guitars], these six pieces aren't intended for uninitiated. The last two pieces see the band return to their more minimal experiments. "Tunnel" is a twelve minute effects drone, while the closing number "And Far Away" turns out to run along the same motif, except it adds a wanton synth digression that sounds as if it was inspired by some 70s synth whiz.
Recorded last September during their tour of the US, "Rakennus" catches up with Circle in their live mode. Ratto is yelling at the top of his voice, while Tomi Leppanen pounds his skins with overt aggression. All the while, Janne Westerlund gives off enough power-hungry steam to allow both melodies and furious riffs to escape. Still, live Circle is a much looser outfit as is evident on "Uusi Uhraus". A loose beat is established, while a harmonica is played to accompany the Ratto raves. If anything, a blues theme is even firmly established. Elsewhere, on "Tulilintu" the band moves into a heavier blues-metal territory, though everything is done with an emphasis on melody. The longish "Tuhat" sees an establishment of psychedelic vibes done in a very loose style. At this point, the howls and belches come in bursts. With the two sides - metal mayhem and a loose, psychedelic, neo-instrumental - Circle is now at a crossroads. Which path will they pursue next time around?
